The Challenge at Hand
The world grapples with a formidable challenge: plastic pollution. Annually, an astonishing one million tons of plastic enters our oceans, primarily via rivers, wreaking havoc on ecosystems. A significant portion of this plastic swiftly sinks into the seabed. Within a month, over 80% of the remaining surface debris may wash ashore near its origin.
Within a year, a staggering 97% might return to land. And yet, plastic in the open ocean endures indefinitely, accumulating in subtropical oceanic gyres, forming ocean garbage patches. The most notorious, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, although covering only 0.5% of the ocean’s surface, houses over 50% of the world’s floating plastic.
Gasification is a thermochemical process that converts various types of carbon-containing materials, including solid waste, into synthetic gas, also known as syngas. These syngas can then be used as an energy source or for the production of valuable chemicals and fuels.
The process begins by preparing the waste feedstock. This can include municipal solid waste.
Then feedstock is introduced into a gasification chamber. Inside the chamber, the waste is subjected to high temperatures, typically ranging from 700°C to 1,500°C, in an oxygen-limited environment.
Under these high-temperature conditions, the carbon-rich feedstock undergoes a series of chemical reactions, primarily gasification and pyrolysis.
These reactions break down the complex hydrocarbons in the waste into simpler molecules, producing syngas. In the final stage, we have a very valuable product that is composed mainly of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), and sometimes carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4).
Microplastics, measuring under 5mm, now imperil the global food chain, infiltrating oceans, endangering marine life, and even appearing in tap water, as revealed by a University of Newcastle study. This crisis extends to humans who consume seafood, introducing microplastics into our diets, and raising serious health questions. Urgent action is imperative to curb plastic pollution and safeguard oceans, marine life, and human well-being.
